Chapter Five

Tate

Dylan and I are in the engineering lab discussing production issues, and I can’t shake off the nagging feeling that something is wrong. I keep telling myself that stress is overwhelming me, but the pressure in my chest is getting difficult to ignore. “Hey, you’re somewhere else.” Dylan waves his hand in front of my face, and I blink. I haven’t heard a word he’s said in several minutes.

Chloe bursts into the room with panic written all over her face. “Tate, you left your phone upstairs. Reid has been trying to reach you.” My heart shatters then drops. There’s no reason for Reid to contact me unless something has happened to Meredith.

“Tell me she’s okay,” I manage to push past the lump in my throat.

Chloe nods as she lays a comforting hand on my arm. I ignore Dylan’s jealous growl and breathe a sigh of relief. “That creep, Toby, from the coffee shop cornered her in the grocery store parking lot. He scared her, and she fell and hurt herself trying to get away but not badly. She’s just shaken up.”

Rage like I’ve never felt in my life flows through my body, and I realize the fierce roar filling the room is mine when Reid steps between me and Chloe. “Calm down. We’ll get you to her.” He grabs my arm in an attempt to hold me back, but I’m already rushing for the door.

I turn to Chloe. “Where is she?”

“Reid and Tori’s house…” She continues, but I’m already running down the hall and miss the rest of what she’s saying.

I’m in a fog the entire ride to Reid’s house. Luckily, there doesn’t seem to be any police on the route because they might arrest me for driving eighty miles an hour the entire way. By some miracle, I manage to place the car into park before I race into the house without knocking, yelling, “Meredith!”

“What the fuck? You asshole. My kids are napping. You wakey, you takey,” Reid snaps as he steps in front of me.

I’m not up to his humor right now. I’m trying to step around him, but he takes hold of my arm. “Look, she’s okay, but you need to calm the fuck down. You look like a madman. Take a deep breath and let the crazy out.”

Knowing her brother is so calm helps some, but I won’t completely allow myself to let go of the fear until I see her. Shaking his arm off of my arm, I growl, “Where the fuck is she?”

“Let’s go. Please, try to at least keep the crazy to a minimum.” As he rolls his eyes and turns, I get a good look at him. He’s wearing jeans and a t-shirt with an apron that says Trophy Husband, more of my rage dissipates. Seeing the ultra-asshole so domesticated used to scare me. Now, I realize, more than anything in the world, I want to be just like him. Karma has one hell of a sense of humor.

My love is curled up on the king-sized bed, sleeping.
